DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1958, covers about 8,360 acres around DeSoto Lake, an old Missouri River channel east of Blair; about half is in Nebraska. The visitor center, 1434 316th Lane, Missouri Valley, Iowa, is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and displays about 250,000 artifacts from the steamboat Bertrand, which sank here in 1865. Roads and trails are open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset; the auto route changes in migration season. Entry $3 per vehicle. Phone: 712-388-4800.
