About Cedar City
Cedar City was a town on the Cedar River in Wheeler County and the county's first, temporary county seat. Its exact site is not recorded in the sources we found, and nothing of it remains.
History
When Wheeler County was organized on April 11, 1881, the special commissioners met at Cedar City, which became the temporary seat with a small courthouse and a few buildings. In an 1882 election Cumminsville drew 101 votes to Cedar City's 80, short of the three-fifths needed to move the seat. By 1885 the little courthouse was too small, and after Ezra Bartlett Mitchell offered a site, Bartlett won the seat in 1885–86 with 193 votes to Cumminsville's 90; Cedar City got one. Local histories say the town “died of the shock.”
