History
According to a letter by Mrs. L. B. Leach printed in the Humphrey Democrat in 1903, the settlement of Tracy Valley began in the spring of 1871. The first settlers named were E. T. Graham, E. L. McGehee, the three Alderson brothers (William, Adam and J. M.) and T. E. and L. C. La Barre; Graham later moved on to Creston. Local tradition says the valley was named for a man named Tracy from the nearby village of Madison, who threw his boots across a swollen creek and waded over.
The First Presbyterian Church of Tracy Valley elected its trustees, L. C. La Barre, L. B. Leach and Walter Mead, at a meeting in the District No. 19 schoolhouse on December 26, 1875. The Humphrey post office, established on August 28, 1871, with Nancy D. Leach as postmistress, began on R. N. Leach’s place and was later moved to Walter Mead’s farm in Tracy Valley.
