About Oconee
Oconee is an unincorporated community in southern Platte County, about 4 miles east of Monroe and 9 miles west-northwest of Columbus. It gives its name to Oconee Township, created in 1908, which also includes Monroe.
History
The town was platted as Lost Creek in February 1880 and replatted in 1883. It was briefly called Dorrance, a name confused with Dorrance, Kansas, and then took the name Oconee, chosen by F. A. Baldwin because no other Nebraska post office had it; it probably came from Oconee, Illinois. The Oconee post office ran from 1887 to 1916.
