About Barton
Barton is a former Union Pacific station in the South Platte valley in Deuel County, about 5½ miles west-southwest of Big Springs and 6 miles northeast of Julesburg, Colorado, and about 2 miles north of the Colorado line. US 138 follows the railroad past the site; I-80 exit 101 is less than half a mile away and the I-76 split about a mile east.
History
Barton was a station on the Union Pacific main line by 1882, in Big Springs precinct. The 1925 Nebraska Place-Names says it was apparently named for a local resident; a later edition names Guy C. Barton of North Platte. It never had its own post office: the 1917 gazetteer listed Barton as a station 6 miles northeast of Julesburg, its banking point and post office. It appears on the 1912 county map, and no station buildings are known to survive.
