About Bertha
Bertha is a rural crossroads in central Burt County, about 7 miles east-northeast of Oakland and 7 miles north of Craig. It gives its name to the U.S. Geological Survey's Bertha map quadrangle.
History
The Bertha post office opened on June 30, 1890, and closed on September 6, 1900. It was named for Bertha Hansen, whose husband owned and ran the blacksmith shop. Two churches were recorded near Bertha: Grace Lutheran and the Bethany Methodist Episcopal Church of Bertha. Grace Lutheran Cemetery is about 1.5 miles south.
An older state highway between Lyons and Decatur, now marked Old Highway 118 on maps, crossed the area. In 1937 the Burt County Rural Public Power Co. took a New Deal loan to build 263 miles of rural electric line in the area.
