About Argo
Argo is a ghost town in the far southwestern corner of Burt County, near the Dodge and Washington county lines, about 6 miles southwest of Craig and 3 miles east of Uehling. Only the Argo Cemetery remains.
History
Argo was an inland village in a Swedish farming settlement that reached into Washington County. Its post office opened on July 22, 1878, and closed on December 7, 1904. In 1890 A. Casper was postmaster and kept a general store, and a flour mill was being built. The name may come from the ship of Greek myth or from Argo in Illinois or Missouri. The population was 43 at its peak, and the name still appeared on a 1912 county map.
Nels Anderson gave an acre for the cemetery, where burials date from 1880. He also rebuilt the Argo Mission Church after a cyclone destroyed it; whether the church still stands is not confirmed.
