The O’Neill trailhead on the Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail, the rail-trail that runs roughly 200 miles across northern Nebraska from Valentine to Norfolk. O’Neill sits near the middle of the route, between Emmet to the west and Inman to the east.
Community amenities marked at this trailhead: camping, convenience store, electricity, grocery store, laundromat, lodging, medical services, restaurant, restrooms, showers, swimming pool and drinking water.
Points of interest noted on the trailhead sign: the Kinkaid Museum, where the law office of Moses Kinkaid, the O’Neill lawyer and politician behind the Kinkaid Act of 1904, is preserved as part of the Holt County Historical Museum, south and east of the giant shamrock painted at the junction of Highways 20 and 281; and the life-sized bronze statue of General John O’Neill, the town’s founder, outside the Holt County Courthouse.
