Shady Bend Cafe sits on the east edge of Grand Island, Nebraska, where Highway 30 meets Shady Bend Road, in a 1931 building put up by H. O. "Doc" Woodward as the gas station, grocery and diner of a Lincoln Highway cabin camp. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The kitchen works from scratch: hand-breaded chicken fried steak that runs past the edge of the plate, homemade pies, fresh soups and a salad bar cut by hand. Breakfast and lunch, with a buffet on Sunday mornings.
Open 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 2 pm Sunday.
