Lincoln Saint Paul UMC is known as the "mother church" of Lincoln Methodism, the congregation from which Trinity and Grace churches grew, helping found Grace Church in East Lincoln in 1886. Its membership was 411 in 1880, rising to over 1,000 after a revival under pastor Dr. C. V. Creighton. Its first building, costing roughly $50,000, burned in September 1899; a second, larger building under Dr. F. L. Wharton cost more than $80,000.
