Description

Winnebago Cemetery is at Winnebago, in Thurston County, with about eighteen hundred and seventy recorded graves. It serves Winnebago (HoChunk) tribal members, non-members and non-Native people alike. The first recorded burial is from 1903, though some graves are older.

The cemetery has a military section honouring the Omaha Scouts — the roughly seventy-five Winnebago men who enlisted in the Nebraska Volunteers in early 1865 as Company A, Omaha Scouts, and served through 1866. Chief Little Priest, who led them, died of wounds after the company came home in the summer of 1866. The year after his death his service flag was raised as a sign of the tribe's allegiance, and that ceremony is still part of the annual gathering that in time became the Winnebago Pow-wow. A state historical marker to the Scouts stands on US 75 half a mile north of the town.
