Description

Fleming Cemetery is a country burial ground in the north-west of Saunders County, about three and a half miles north-west of Colon, with about three hundred and seventy-five recorded graves. The land was deeded to the Sand Creek Burying Ground Association in the early 1870s, and the ground has been called the Sand Creek Cemetery as well as Fleming Cemetery ever since.

It may be the only cemetery in this part of the county with a Black family among its early settlers, and their children are buried here.

No one has ever paid for a lot in it. The mowing was done by volunteers for many years, until in 1985 families with people buried here set up a fund for a caretaker. Most of the ground is still native prairie grass, which is much of its character.
