Shackelford Cemetery lies in Section 19 of Township 27, Range 38, on what was the Wes Shackelford homestead, in the ranch country of the south-west of the county.
The lots were surveyed out by Gene Fry, who had some experience of surveying. He was the first person buried in the cemetery he had laid out, and his grave is on the north-east corner. Fry, Martin, Ridgeway and Snyder are among the families recorded.
This cemetery is not indexed on the larger national burial sites, so no memorial count or mapped coordinate is available. It is recorded in the Cherry County GenWeb transcriptions. The ground is private; ask locally before visiting. The legal description puts it roughly forty miles south of Irwin, the nearest village in Cherry County, and it is listed under Irwin; Hyannis, in Grant County, is about twenty-one miles south and far closer.
For burial records or plot enquiries, contact the Cherry County Clerk in Valentine. Ownership can also be confirmed through the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry at the State Historical Society.
