Dakota City Cemetery stands within the town, on its northern boundary at 1300 Pine Street. It is the largest burial ground in Dakota County.
This is old country by Nebraska standards. Dakota County was created on 16 March 1855, less than a year after Nebraska Territory itself and twelve years before statehood, and Dakota City was established in 1856. Of the ten towns first laid out along this stretch of the Missouri, Dakota City is the only one still standing.
The first burials here were in 1857 — Mrs Charles Reom and her child, L. G. Packard, and a child of George A. Hinsdale.
Around 3,543 memorials have been recorded, which is a record of what has been photographed and indexed rather than a count of everyone buried there.
