Seward is Nebraska’s Official 4th of July City, designated by Governor Exon in 1973 and recognised nationally by Bicentennial officials in 1976, and it hosts the celebration on the holiday itself rather than a floating weekend. The tradition dates to 1868, when the community dug a well for the occasion and the women of the town sewed an American flag. Seward hosted Nebraska’s celebration of the country’s 250th birthday on 4 July 2026. The day carries the Grand Parade, the Freedom Run, a car show, Crafts on the Square on the courthouse lawn, Food Alley and free fireworks at Plum Creek Park.
