Fairbury City Hall is the municipal office for Fairbury, Nebraska, at 612 D Street. Fairbury is the county seat of Jefferson County, population 3,970. Founded in 1869 by James B. Mattingly and Woodford G. McDowell and incorporated in early 1872. The city offices administer the municipal utilities: electric, water, sewer and garbage collection. Fairbury was the Rock Island Railroad's Western Division headquarters for nearly eighty years, from 1886 to 1965. Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, southeast of town, was a stop on the Oregon-California Trail and the Pony Express and the site of an 1861 gunfight involving Wild Bill Hickok. The largest area employers are Endicott Clay Products, Jefferson Community Health Center, Fairbury Public Schools and the City of Fairbury itself. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
