Columbus City Hall is the municipal office for Columbus, Nebraska, at 2424 14th Street. Columbus is the county seat of Platte County, population 24,028, at the confluence of the Loup and Platte rivers and the crossroads of US 30 and US 81. Settled May 28 1856 and incorporated as a town in 1858. Major employers include Behlen Manufacturing, Becton Dickinson, Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland, Columbus Community Hospital and Nebraska Public Power District, which is headquartered here. Birthplace of Andrew Jackson Higgins, designer of the LCVP landing craft, commemorated by the Andrew Jackson Higgins National Memorial. Glur's Tavern, built in 1876, is billed as the oldest tavern west of the Missouri River.
