Benkelman City Hall is the municipal office for Benkelman, Nebraska, at 126 7th Avenue East. Benkelman is the county seat of Dundy County, population 821, in Nebraska's far southwest corner. Founded about 1880 as Collinsville, honoring Moses Collins, and renamed by the railroad in 1882 for stock raiser J. G. Benkelman. The city operates its own municipal utilities department with an after-hours line for utility and service emergencies. The BNSF Railway line follows the Republican River through town and US 34 runs through the community. Notable natives include Dave Heineman, the 39th Governor of Nebraska, actor Ward Bond, and Marine Corps Lieutenant General Edward Snedeker.
