Ponca City Hall is the municipal office for Ponca, Nebraska, at 123 West Third Street. Ponca is the county seat of Dixon County, population 907. Established 1856, Nebraska's fourth-oldest town; incorporated as a village in 1871 and grew after the Covington, Columbus and Black Hills Railroad reached it in 1876. Named for the Ponca tribe. The city owns and operates water, gas and electric utilities plus sanitation and recycling, cemetery services, and building permits and inspections. Facilities include a community center, public library, senior citizen center and city parks; the city runs its own fire and police services and a parks and recreation program. Governed by a Mayor and Council with a City Manager and City Clerk. The Downtown Ponca Historic District is on the National Register. Ponca State Park, two miles north on the forested Missouri River bluffs, is the eastern terminus for National Wild and Scenic River float trips. Days of '56, one of Nebraska's oldest rodeos, runs the last full weekend in June. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
