Chadron City Hall is the municipal office for Chadron, Nebraska, at 234 Main Street. Chadron is the county seat of Dawes County, population 5,206, in the Nebraska Panhandle. The city runs a public transit service out of City Hall, a 12-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift operating weekdays. Departments include Administration, Public Works, Police and the public library; the City Council meets at City Hall. Chadron dates to 1884, when the railroad came through and the earlier town of O'Linn was moved about six miles to the new line; the name comes from fur trapper Louis Chartran. Home to Chadron State College, whose 11-story high-rise is the tallest building in the Panhandle, and to the Museum of the Fur Trade, the largest such museum in the United States. The Chadron Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2010. The city also hosts US Forest Service headquarters for the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests.
