Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Company of Polk County, organized in Stromsburg on 26 March 1887 and still writing today — one of the small mutual assessment insurers that are a distinctive part of Nebraska's insurance history. It covers fire, lightning, wind and hail with endorsements for theft, vandalism, water damage and livestock losses, and is open to owners of rural, village and city property. Members get one vote each and elect seven directors; the annual meeting is the second Tuesday in February. It reinsures through the Nebraska Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association of Wahoo. Fittingly for a company founded by Swedish settlers, Stromsburg is the Swede Capital of Nebraska.
