Evergreen Assisted Living Residence, known locally as The Evergreen, stands one mile north of O'Neill on Highway 281, on the north-west edge of town. It is a single-level building of 39,900 square feet with 53 apartments and 60 licensed beds, and it is minutes from the hospital, doctors' offices, chiropractors, optometrists and dental offices.
One building, three streets. The Evergreen is connected throughout, but it fronts three streets, which is why it carries more than one address. North Harrison Street, which is Highway 281, runs along the west. West Kros Drive runs along the north. Jeanette Way is to the south-east.
Finding the right door. Assisted living is through the west door, on the Harrison Street side. The independent living apartments, the Evergreen Independent Cottages, are at the east end on Jeanette Way. Meals on Wheels is through the south entrance in the center of the building.
The apartments. Each has a private bedroom, a full bathroom, a kitchenette and a living area. Showers are walk-in with a seat and grab bars, and there are handrails along the hallways.
The building. A secured entrance leads to reception and the administrator's office, with indoor mailboxes for residents and valet parking. Garages are behind the building. There are two sitting areas with a large corner fireplace, game tables for cards and puzzles, and a library with a large-screen television. The main dining room seats eighty and has a corner fireplace of its own; a separate family dining room seats up to eight for private meals. There is also a beauty shop, an activity room with a residential kitchen, a laundry, a physical therapy and exercise room, a private chapel, and an outdoor gazebo.
Care. Three meals a day, staff on site around the clock, health monitoring, medication assistance, daily activities and a daily exercise program, physical and occupational therapy, and weekly housekeeping and laundry. Care plans are written to each resident.

The whole complex is run by one manager, from an office in the south-west corner. That is where inquiries and tours start, whichever part of the building they concern.
The south entrance. The south door, in the center of the building, is normally unlocked, and that part of the Evergreen is used for a good many functions. Meals on Wheels works from there, and visiting services rent rooms in it. It is the door to use if you are not calling on a resident.
