About Moorefield

Moorefield is a village of 27 people (2020) in northern Frontier County, on NE 23 at 2,832 feet, about 7 miles northeast of Curtis. It is in the Medicine Valley school district. The Lazy RW Distillery, open by appointment, is in the village. Moorefield is on Central Time.

History

Settlers came in the 1870s. The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad reached the site in 1886, and the post office opened on June 10, 1886; the name began as “Moore’s Field,” for the original townsite owner. Eyer L. “Slonnie” Sloniger (1896–1969), born on a farm outside town, became No. 1 on American Airlines’ pilot seniority list in 1930 and its first chief pilot in 1934, made 88 Atlantic crossings in World War II and entered the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame in 2017. Moorefield had 156 people in 1930.
