The Dawes County Fair is held at the Dawes County Fairgrounds in Chadron from late July into the start of August, running about ten days. In 2026 it marked its 140th annual edition, which makes it one of the oldest continuously running county fairs in Nebraska. The week carries 4-H livestock shows, static exhibits, a fashion show, open class judging, horse shows, a youth rodeo, ranch rodeos, tractor pulls, antique equipment demonstrations, 3-D archery, a tough truck competition and a free fair dance, with a Good Neighbor Award and an annual theme. Some events are staged at Chadron High School rather than solely on the grounds. Admission has run at ten dollars a day, free for children under twelve and for all 4-H members.
