Description

A tavern on 11th Street in Columbus, built in 1876 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975 — a worn white clapboard building that has been left very largely alone, original saloon sign and all. It claims to be the oldest continuously operating tavern west of the Missouri, and it has been open through Prohibition and everything since. Local history has Buffalo Bill Cody drinking here in May 1883, in town for the funeral of Major Frank North of the Pawnee Scouts, and settling his bill with a thousand dollar note. Todd and Carrie Trofholz sold it in August 2024 after thirty-two years; the new owners have kept it as a tavern. If you visit one bar in Nebraska for the building rather than the beer, this is the one.
