The Durham Museum at 801 S. 10th St. occupies Omaha's former Union Station, an Art Deco landmark designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood that opened January 15, 1931, and is a National Historic Landmark. After Union Pacific closed the station in 1971, the city acquired it and the Western Heritage Museum opened there in 1975. Following a renovation funded largely by Charles and Margre Durham, it became the Durham Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate. Visitors can explore trains at track level, including Union Pacific steam locomotive 1243, a Pullman car and an Omaha streetcar.
