Ash Hollow State Historical Park preserves one of the most significant landmarks along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Pioneer national historic trails near Lewellen in Garden County. The hollow provided the first reliable water, grass, and shade for emigrants descending the steep Windlass Hill after crossing the high plains. The park features a visitor center with trail history exhibits, Ash Hollow Cave with prehistoric human remains dating back 3,000 years, and interpretive hiking trails along the rim above the North Platte River. A Nebraska State Park Entry Permit is required.
