Terrytown is a small city in Scotts Bluff County in the Nebraska panhandle, on the bank of the North Platte River between Scottsbluff and Gering. Those two larger neighbors have grown together into a single urban area that takes Terrytown in with it, and children here attend Gering Public Schools.
The city was founded in 1949 by Terry Carpenter, a Scottsbluff businessman who served in the Nebraska Legislature through the 1950s and 1960s and gave the place his name. For a couple of decades it was where the valley went out for the evening. The Carena Drive-In held six hundred cars and lasted into the mid 1980s before it was torn down in the 1990s. Terry’s Arena was the local entertainment hub in the 1950s, and the city records performances there by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Fire destroyed the arena in July 1968.
What is left is mostly a residential city at the edge of a larger urban area, with the river and the bluffs close at hand. The population was 646 in 2000, rose to 1,198 by 2010 and stood at 1,057 at the 2020 census. Since January 2018 the Tri-City Roadrunner bus has connected Terrytown with Scottsbluff and Gering.
