Loomis was established in 1885 as a railroad townsite, named for N. H. Loomis, a railroad official. The village is home to the Farmers State Bank building, individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one of only five such listings in Phelps County. The county's own tourism material promotes Loomis as the "Undiscovered Gem of Phelps County."
