About Loomis
Loomis is a village in Phelps County in south-central Nebraska, seven miles west of Holdrege, the county seat. The 2020 census counted 391 residents, up slightly from 382 in 2010 and down from 397 in 2000. The village covers about 0.33 square miles at an elevation near 2,420 feet. Bertrand is seven miles north-west and Atlanta seven miles south.
History
Swedish settlers took up land in this part of Phelps County in the 1870s. The town itself dates to the mid-1880s. Sources give 1885 or 1886 for its start; the post office opened in 1886, and the village incorporated that year along with a bank, a school and the Loomis Evangelical Free Church. The name honours N. H. Loomis, a railroad official.
Today
Farming still sets the terms here. Agri Co-op is a large presence in the local economy and built a 28,000-ton dry fertiliser facility in 2007. The village runs a volunteer fire and rescue service. Community Days falls in August and Turkey Days in November. In 2006 BusinessWeek named Loomis one of the top 25 places in the country to raise a child.

Loomis was established in 1885 as a railroad townsite, named for N. H. Loomis, a railroad official. The village is home to the Farmers State Bank building, individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one of only five such listings in Phelps County. The county's own tourism material promotes Loomis as the "Undiscovered Gem of Phelps County."
