Town Overview
Wellfleet is a village of 72 on 0.27 square miles in southern Lincoln County, at an elevation of 2,835 feet. It was platted around 1887 when the railroad was extended to the point, and named after Wellfleet, Massachusetts — the Cape Cod town, some 1,700 miles east.
Its population has barely moved in a generation: 76 in 2000, 78 in 2010, 72 in 2020. It is part of the North Platte micropolitan area.

Lincoln County is Nebraska's third-largest county by area at 2,575 square miles, with 34,676 residents in 2020 and North Platte as its seat and largest city. The North and South Platte rivers join within the county, and it is the westernmost Nebraska county to observe Central Time throughout. It borders McPherson County to the northwest, Logan County to the northeast, Custer County and Dawson County to the east, Frontier County to the southeast, Hayes County to the southwest, and Perkins County and Keith County to the west. Despite the name, the state capital is nowhere near it.
Nearest towns. Wellfleet sits in the broken country between the Platte valley and the Medicine Creek drainage. Maywood, in Frontier County to the southeast, is the nearest school town; North Platte, the county seat, lies to the north.
Points of Interest & Events
A Cape Cod name on the high plains. Wellfleet takes its name from Wellfleet on Cape Cod — one of a good many Nebraska railroad towns given eastern names by officials who never lived in them.
Wellfleet Lake. The village’s real draw sits just outside it. A dam completed in 1932 — reviving a project begun and abandoned during the town’s 1890s bust — created a lake described at the time as two miles long. It is managed by Nebraska Game and Parks as the Wellfleet Wildlife Management Area (a WMA, not a state recreation area), with hunting, fishing, birding and primitive camping access, and no-wake boating permitted. Anglers report channel catfish, largemouth and white bass and crappie. Phone 308-963-4366.
Canyon country and Medicine Creek. Southern Lincoln County is rougher than the Platte valley to the north: draws, canyons and rangeland running down toward Medicine Creek, and good hunting country. The creek is a 96-mile tributary of the Republican River that rises in the Sand Hills near Somerset, north-west of here, and U.S. Route 83 crosses it on the Medicine Creek Bridge just south of the village. It should not be confused with the Medicine Creek State Recreation Area and Harry Strunk Lake, which are more than fifty miles south near Cambridge.
The Wellfleet Fall Festival. For a village of seventy-odd people this is a remarkable survival: the 75th annual Fall Festival was held in September 2024, putting its beginnings around 1950. It runs on Nile Avenue and has featured a ranch rodeo and horse races — the races returned in 2024 after a three-year gap — along with a yearly theme. Maywood Public Schools describes it as the community’s central annual event. Check the current year’s dates before travelling.
Education & Health
Schools. There is no school in Wellfleet. The village is one of the communities served by Maywood Public Schools, based at Maywood in Frontier County to the southeast.
Health care. There is no hospital or clinic in Wellfleet. The nearest hospital is Great Plains Health, 601 West Leota Street in North Platte, about 26 miles north up U.S. Route 83, an acute care hospital with emergency services. Note that the Curtis Medical Center at Curtis, long the closest clinic to the south-east, was announced for closure in July 2025 — ring ahead before relying on it.
Highway Access
Wellfleet sits just off a U.S. highway rather than out on the county road network. U.S. Route 83 and Nebraska Highway 23 run concurrently past the village, about half a mile from its centre; NE-23 meets US-83 near Wellfleet and stays with it southward until the two separate near Maywood. US-83 is the historic McCook–North Platte highway, and it was paved through the village in 1955.
Interstate 80 is about 24 miles straight north up US-83, at Exit 177 in North Platte — the nearest interstate access.
Distances here are deceptive, and worth checking before setting off. North Platte is 26 miles by road and about the same in a straight line. But Maxwell, Brady and Gothenburg all lie to the north-east with no direct road across the divide, so the drive is close to double the straight-line distance: Maxwell is 25 miles away as the crow flies but about 40 by road, and Gothenburg 32 against roughly 53.
