About Hildreth
Hildreth is a village in Franklin County, about 27 miles south of Kearney. Wilcox is roughly six miles west, Upland about seven miles east, Minden twelve miles north-east and Holdrege eighteen miles north-west. The village covers about 0.57 square miles at an elevation near 2,170 feet. The 2010 census counted 378 residents, second most of any community in Franklin County. The business district runs along Commercial Avenue.
History
Hildreth dates to 1886, when the railroad was extended to the site. It was named for Carson Hildreth, one of the original owners of the townsite. The post office opened in 1887.
Today
The village takes Small Town, Big Family as its motto. It keeps a village board, a fire department, a public library and a community foundation, and publishes a newsgram for residents. Pierce Lyden, an actor and author who received the Golden Boot Award, came from Hildreth. He lived from 1908 to 1998.

Hildreth is a village in northern Franklin County settled by German immigrants beginning around 1873. The town itself developed once the railroad reached the site in 1885-86, and it was formally incorporated in 1886. Hildreth is named for Carson Hildreth (1857-1926), described in local records as a major player in starting the town -- an origin independently corroborated by his own archival collection with History Nebraska. Notable resident Pierce Lyden (1908-1998), a film actor known for playing villains in Western films and later a recipient of the Golden Boot Award, called Hildreth home. The village, whose motto is "Small Town, Big Family," has 50 blocks of paved streets and sits about 27 miles south of Kearney. With a 2020 population of 377, Hildreth has declined from a historical peak of 603 residents in 1907.
Hildreth's well-documented namesake and its Golden Boot-winning native son give the village a clearer historical footprint than many of its Franklin County neighbors. Though its population has fallen substantially from its early-20th-century peak, the town's paved streets and community motto reflect a place that has worked to maintain its small-town character.
